MGA Paint Codes

Introduced in 1955, the MGA roadster represented a revolutionary breakthrough for MG by completely abandoning the antiquated, upright styling of the pre-war T-Series in favor of a sleek, aerodynamic envelope body. This modern design was paired with the new, more powerful B-Series engine and showcased through a highly specific, evolving factory color palette.

Early 1500 models were defined by distinctive colors like Orient Red, Glacier Blue (exclusive to the roadster), and Mineral Blue (exclusive to the coupe). Certain paint transitions were even tied directly to production milestones; for example, Tyrolite Green was used on 1500 roadsters through chassis #48999, and Island Green on 1500 coupes through chassis #48979, before both body styles transitioned to Ash Green (starting at chassis #49000 and #48980, respectively). As subsequent iterations introduced significant mechanical advancements—including front disc brakes on the 1600 models and a high-performance, four-wheel-disc setup on the rare Twin-Cam variant—the paint selection was updated to feature Iris Blue, Alamo Beige, Dove Grey, and Chariot Red across all 1600 and MkII models. Timeless staples like Old English White and Black remained continuously available across all models throughout the production run.

The MGA ultimately became an unprecedented international success for the British automaker, with total production reaching over 101,000 units before it was replaced by the MGB in 1962. The vast majority of these cars were exported—particularly to the United States—cementing the MGA's legacy as a quintessential 1950s sports car and a massive commercial triumph.
